OVERVIEW

The Canadian Arthritis Network (CAN) is pleased to provide details about the launch of its new Knowledge Translation and Exchange (KTE) Program, developed in partnership with the Canadian Institutes of Health Research's (CIHR) Knowledge Synthesis and Exchange Branch (KSE) and Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis (IMHA).

The goal of the KTE Program is to use existing funding opportunities to support syntheses and supplements on CAN/arthritis-related research topics that will consolidate knowledge and expertise in this area and maximize its translation to the knowledge user/receptor community and ultimately impact Canadians and Canada.

CAN and its partners will be supporting two types of funding opportunities: KT Supplement Grants and KT Synthesis Grants.

KT Supplement Grants

Objective:

  • To facilitate the dissemination and uptake of research results through appropriate KT strategies/activities based on the best evidence of effectiveness for the identified target audience(s) following the successful completion of a CAN/CIHR grant/award or component of a grant/award.

The CAN-CIHR partnership will allow Network Investigators to apply upon successful completion of a CAN grant/award.

Funding:

  • The maximum amount awarded for a single KT Supplement Grant is $40,000 for up to one year and they are non-renewable.

KT Synthesis Grants

Objectives:

  • To increase the uptake/application of synthesized knowledge in decision-making by supporting partnerships between researchers and knowledge-users to produce scoping reviews (defined as exploratory projects that systematically map the literature on a topic, identifying the key concepts, theories, sources of evidence and gaps in the research. The review may identify where there is sufficient evidence to conduct a full synthesis or where more primary research is needed) and syntheses that respond to the information needs of knowledge-users in all areas of health;
  • To develop new kinds of questions relevant to knowledge-users and areas of research that have not traditionally been synthesized.

Some examples of allowable activities include: disseminating research results through specialized publications; development/maintenance/updating of websites; producing and distributing written materials in various formats; travel costs for meetings; new hires; developing educational CD-ROMs and other tools, etc.

Funding: Two types of projects will be funded and they are non-renewable:

  • Up to $100,000 per year for full Knowledge Synthesis Projects; and,
  • Up to $50,000 per year for one year for Scoping Reviews
